Max Verstappen delivered on his final flying lap during an action-packed qualifying at Circuit Zandvoort to secure pole position for tomorrow’s Dutch Grand Prix, while Oracle Red Bull Racing team-mate Sergio Pérez will start from seventh on the grid.
Following two red flags as both Charles Leclerc and Logan Sargeant went into the barriers, the two-time world champion mastered the wet conditions to finish half a second ahead of Lando Norris and snatch pole for a third year in a row.
The Dutch driver will hope to give his home fans plenty to cheer during Sunday’s race as he aims to equal Sebastian Vettel’s 2013 record of nine consecutive victories.
Verstappen said: “It was a very tricky qualifying starting on the intermediates as the track surface is quite slippery with the new tarmac, so it was all about putting your laps in and staying out of trouble. I think we managed that quite well but also the end when we could go onto the slick tyres there was one dry line in some places and we had to risk it a bit but the last lap was very enjoyable.”
