Victor Martins set the fastest time on the final day of running at the Yas Marina post-season test. The ART Grand Prix driver’s 1:35.733 in the morning session put him 0.038s ahead of Rodin Motorsport’s Alexander Dunne.
In the afternoon, Campos Racing’s Josep María Martí set the pace, his 1:37.351 put him 0.072s clear of AIX Racing’s Nicolas Varrone.
MORNING
It was another busy start to the day as every team barring Invicta Racing and MP Motorsport sent both their drivers out at the green light.
But it was ART Grand Prix driver Victor Martins that set the early pace, his time of a 1:37.634 put him over two-tenths clear off Campos Racing’s Josep María Martí.
However, the pair were able to extract second push laps from their Supersoft tyres and Martí took to the top of the timesheets with a 1:37.155 only for Martins to beat him to P1 by just 0.088s.
There was further movement still as Rafael Villagómez first and then Christian Mansell took turns at the top before Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Dino Beganovic‘s 1:35.843 put him 0.234s clear of the Rodin Motorsport driver.
But then came Martins once again and his latest attempt of a 1:35.733 put him back on top and 0.070s clear of Beganovic.
Soon after though it was bad news for the Frenchman as he stopped on track at Turn 13 bringing out the first Red Flag of the day.
Once the session resumed Rodin’s Alexander Dunne moved himself up to P2, his lap putting him to within 0.038s off Martins’ leading time.
Long runs became the focus of the morning after that meaning there were no further changes to the timesheets. Martins ended up in P1 ahead of Dunne and Beganovic, with Luke Browning’s 54 laps the most of any driver in the session.
AFTERNOON
Long runs were the order of the day to kick off the final three hours of the season, with John Bennett setting the early pace for Van Amersfoort Racing on 1:40.699.
But soon came Richard Verschoor and he went straight to the top of the timesheets for MP Motorsport with a 1:37.956, putting him 2.7s clear of the rest of the field.
Into the final 90 minutes and AIX Racing’s Nicolas Varrone went over half a second faster than Verschoor with a 1:37.423.
There was a halt to proceedings as we entered the final hour of the season when DAMS Lucas Oil’s Jak Crawford hit the wall at Turn 1.
Once the track was clear, testing resumed and it was Martí on the move, completing a 1:37.521 to go to second before going even quicker on his next lap to put him in P1, 1:37.351 now the time to beat.
Rodin Motorsport pair Alexander Dunne and Christian Mansell were late movers up the leaderboard as they went to third and fourth respectively, while Bennett completed the most laps in the session with 58 for VAR.
The clock wound down with Martí ending the session fastest of all bringing an end to the 2024 Formula 2 season.
