William Byron outlasts late-race action to win 2024 Daytona 500

NASCAR | February 19, 2024

A two-wide battle through the closing laps of the 2024 Daytona 500 eventually saw William Byron take the checkered flag under caution to win the 66th Daytona 500 Monday evening.

The caution came out just as Byron took the white flag as Ross Chastain and 2022 Daytona 500 champion Austin Cindric spun through the front stretch grass. The race was deemed official as the white flag came out before the yellow was thrown.

Alex Bowman finished runner-up. Christopher Bell, Corey LaJoie, and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top five. AJ Allmendinger, John Hunter Nemechek, Chase Briscoe, Erik Jones, and Noah Gragson completed the top 10.

Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who was initially caught in the first yellow of the day on Lap 6, finished 28th. Tyler Reddick, the 2024 Bluegreen Vacations Duel 1 winner, finished 29th.

Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney finished 30th after being involved in a 22-car pileup with nine laps to go in the “Great American Race” that also involved two-time series champ Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Tyler Reddick and 2023 Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

The Cup Series will head to Atlanta Motor Speedway next for the Ambetter Health 400 on Feb. 25 (3 p.m. ET, FOX, PRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
